In 1974, Grand Master Leong embarked on a remarkable journey by establishing his very own Kung Fu academy in Adelaide, Australia. Inspired by the accomplishments and triumphs of the renowned Chinese martial artist Sum Nung, Leong took this step after closely following Nung’s achievements.
Despite already being a recognized Wing Chun master under the guidance of Lai Chi Wa, Leong made a pivotal decision in 1980 to travel to China and become a student of Nung.
Accomplishments and Training with Sum Nung

Impressed by Leong’s exceptional talent, Sum Nung graciously accepted him as a student, as he believed in nurturing only those who possessed true fighting spirit, drawing inspiration from his passion for bird fighting. Over the course of the next decade, Leong made numerous trips to China to continue learning from Nung, until the latter’s passing in 2002.

The Bond with Sum Nung and Ip Chun
During his younger days, Grand Master Leong’s connection with the legendary Ip Chun began through his training under the esteemed Wing Chun master Sum Nung. However, the bond between Sum Nung and Ip Chun had its roots in their high school days. It was during this time that Sum Nung fearlessly defended Ip Chun from bullies, showcasing his natural talent and dedication to martial arts.
As fate would have it, this act of courage and friendship left a lasting impact on both Ip Chun and Sum Nung. Although their paths did not cross again after high school, the profound bond between the two became a significant part of Leong’s journey as he embarked on his Wing Chun training.
A Special Gift from Ip Chun
As Leong’s training progressed under the guidance of Sum Nung, his skills and dedication caught the attention of Ip Chun. Impressed by Leong’s commitment to the art and knowing the history of how Sum Nung had defended him, Ip Chun took a liking to Leong right away. Recognizing Leong’s potential, Ip Chun presented him with a significant honor – the first certificate issued under his association, marked with the number “001.” This gesture marked the beginning of a profound mentorship that would shape Leong’s martial arts journey.

Devastating Fire
In 2015, Leong’s Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy was nearly incinerated after a fire started in the basement of the building. Leong lost over $100,000 worth of equipment, including five wooden dummies.
Leong had no insurance, however he was able to recover with the help of his students. They donated money and visited from overseas to help the academy recover. I myself, the founder of the Melbourne Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy, also donated two special handmade wooden dummies.
Rebirth Ceremony
To celebrate the rebirth of his academy, Leong hosted a Rebirth From the Ashes ceremony in Adelaide. This was attended by State Members of Parliament Jing Lee and David Pisoni, as well as me. The ceremony featured lion dancing and a traditional feast of roast pork.
